Food Fundi offers a catering service for on-site birthday parties, school fundraisers, photo shoots, or media launches, exclusively at all of Sugar Rush Park's expansive venues.

The Food Fundi team has done it all; from weddings to stadiums, but these days we prefer to cater from home! (We don't offer catering services outside of our venue.)

It's Heritage Month, so we thought we'd share the little-known history of our humble family business with you, Ballito.

(Welcome to our Ted Talk 😊.)
The OG Food Fundi Café started as a teeny tiny 20-seater coffee shop in the Lowveld, back in 2011 when Jason and Mel Powell were newly married, and Jason still had all his hair 😆
Food Fundi soon grew to 3 outlets plus a large catering company, with clients from Jenna Clifford to Jane Goodall, radio slots on @jacarandafm and @risefm943, a couple of @eatoutguide awards, and even a stint on @pasellatv in Afrikaans nogal.
When Jason and Mel had the chance to open up other restaurants and move back to the North Coast, they packed up and settled in Ballito. Fast forward to (eek) lockdown, and they were offered the chance to take over the coffee shop at @sugarrushkzn where they revived Food Fundi 2.0, keeping the same family recipes that had guests from Mozambique to Swaziland and Mbombela seeking them out for their flavour fix. The Fundi bread (#besttoast), sweet potato crisps, choc brownies and Fundi Fire sauce (to name a few) are exactly the same 14 years later.
Even while filming his new @natgeo show, Do Not Attempt at @ndlondloreptilepark56, @davidblaine and the production crew just had to bag a few bottles of Fundi Fire (incidentally before setting himself on fire in some other crazy stunts!)
We're still lucky enough to be hosting superstars like @realblackcoffee and @sharksrugby and we're so excited to enjoy another 14 years of satisfying hungry tummies and creating happy hearts.

We may have a new summer menu loading, but some things will NEVER change, like our classic Eggs Benedict.

And if you've ever wondered about the origins of this dish, historical accounts vary. Some claim it's from Pope Benedict XIII, who ruled the Vatican from 1724 to 1730, and was famously on an eggs and toast diet, and requested a "lemony sauce" to accompany the dish. Others believe that eggs Benedict was cobbled together at Delmonico’s, a Swiss-owned New York restaurant that had its heyday in the Gilded Age of the 1830s. The more fun version is that Lemuel Benedict, a man from a rich family who shamed his people by marrying an opera singer (shocking, right?😆) went to the Waldorf Hotel one hungover morning in 1894 and asked for “some buttered toast, crisp bacon, two poached eggs, and a 'hooker' of hollandaise sauce." (hooker meaning a 'glug' of sauce).
One thing is unanimous though; that the proper time to eat eggs Benedict has always been after 10am.
We say, any time is a good time for a good Benny!
